On July 30, a brilliant achievement in the art world took place in the Hamptons.
The Watermill Center, an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts and humanities located in Water Mill, presented the awe-inspiring STAND during the starry 30th anniversary Summer Benefit.

Performances and installations took guests minds to an elevated level of enchantment as they escaped into the night that raised funds in support of The Center’s year-round programming. Curated by Noah Khoshbin and highlighting the work of The Watermill Center’s international community, the 2022 benefit and concurrent exhibitions uniquely captured the spirit of The Watermill Center’s 30 year artistic mission.

Notable guests including Barbara Graustark, Carl Adams, Fern Mallis, Lee Fryd, Paul Austin, Young Paris, Cameron Silver, Chris Coffee, Tatiana Platt, Yan Assoun, and Polina Proshkina gathered over cocktails, and small bites from a local Chef, Colin Ambrose.
Various exhibits were on display during the night. STAND included Adam Parker Smith’s outdoor Sarcophagi sculpture series, as well as eight cast bronze sculptures produced by artist Liz Glynn, based on Auguste Rodin’s structures from her project, The Myth of Singularity.
The centerpiece was Japanese artist Tsubasa Kato evolving participatory installation/action Pull and Raise. Kato’s that showcases participatory actions with an audience to highlight the current need for global action and solidarity. The energy and level of determination by the crowd to make the installation a full success by erecting the piece fully upright was a sight to see. The powerful and positive group energy was felt all throughout the Hamptons.
Additionally, STAND opened public presentations by artists Elettra Bottazzi (Italy), Robson Catalunha (Brazil), Deniz Celebic (Turkey), Yeliz Celebic (Turkey), NiNi Dongnier (China), Laurent Le Gall (France), Liz Glynn (United States), Tsubasa Kato (Japan), Christopher Knowles (United States), Taeyi Lim (Korea), Niccolo Masini (Italy), Hollie Miller (United Kingdom), Robert Nava (United States), Adam Parker Smith (United States), Vilim Poljanec (Croatia), Matthew Shipp (United States), Xu Zhen (China), among others. Curated by Robert Wilson and Noah Khoshbin. The opening of solo exhibitions by returning alumni artist Christopher Knowles and Inga Maren Otto Fellowship resident Robert Nava were also proudly displayed.
STAND was presented by Van Cleef & Arpels.

ROBBIE ROBERTSON RIP — This was a hard one. I first met Robbie Robertson decades ago at the Fred Segal store in LA’s Santa Monica of all places. I don’t know what he was there for, but I began to see him every time I visited the store. Seeing him later at an airport baggage area, I walked up to him, introduced myself and so began a relationship that I truly treasured.
Only Murders In The Building
MURDERS MURDERED? — I wish I could say Season 3 of Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building killed … but, after a terrific cold-opening with Meryl Streep, unfortunately the show faltered big time. Steve Martin, who I’ve always enjoyed immensely and Selena Gomez’s roles have been downsized dramatically. Martin Short, also grand for certain, magically assumes the lead role here.

FRIEDKIN GONE — Billy Friedkin has left the building at 87. The director of the classic French Connection (1971) epic was a firestorm of a director; right up there with Hal Ashby-a huge fave of ours. He also did Crusing (with Al Pacino and Paul Sorvino) and To Lie And Die In L.A. which was a surprise hit and a terrific movie with Billy Petersen. Connection won 5 Oscars and nominated for 10. Gene Hackman was sensational. Here’s the full chase scene with Hackman in a 1971 Pontiac Le Mans and the bad guy on the subway. An interview with Friedkin said that he personally operated the camera. Just classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mgIDVwdD-M&t=308s
Fiery, confrontational, he was the last of the gunslingers in the movie world before Spielberg, Coppola and Scorsese came into play.
He also did The Exorcist, two years after Connection, which was a massive hit as well; scoring $500 million. He also directed Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party and Mart Crowley’s The Boys In The Band in 1970.
But The Exorcist proved to be his last box office bonanza. He did not direct another movie until 1977’s Sorcerer, (with Roy Scheider) a challenging remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s The Wages of Fear. It went well over budget and disappointed at the time, though it has since become appreciated. This movie is one of my all-time favorites.
For an absolutely brilliant interview from Deadline’s Mike Fleming, Jr., on Friedkin, check it out here: https://deadline.com/2023/08/william-friedkin-q-and-a-70s-moviemaking-tales-of-glory-and-reckless-abandon-1201491441/comment-page-1/#comment-3815513
He was an auteur of the highest order.
SCOTT’S BLADE — (Via Deadline) Director Ridley Scott is looking back and opening up about not being able to direct the Blade Runner sequel. The filmmaker had been announced by Alcon Entertainment back in 2011 to helm the follow-up to his 1982 film that starred Harrison Ford. However, Scott had to step down from director duties following a scheduling clash and Denis Villeneuve stepped up to direct Blade Runner 2049.
“I shouldn’t have had to make that decision,” he told Empire magazine recently. “But I had to. I should have done Blade Runner 2.”
Scott went on to direct the sci-fi horror film Alien: Covenant instead of the Blade Runner sequel which ended up starring Ford, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas and Jared Leto.
Scott went on to direct the sci-fi horror film Alien: Covenant instead of the Blade Runner sequel which ended up starring Ford, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas and Jared Leto.
That first Blade Runner movie in 1982 was just an out-and-out classic. From the acting, to script, to visuals and Vangelis’ haunting music. In a way, every sci-fi movie since then has been judged against it. The 2049 version was totally confusing from start to finish; even though it was certainly intriguing to see Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling together.

Chris Noth
Chris Noth. I’ve known him for years and when the allegations came out about him, nothing was ever proved, so go figure. He was interviewed Monday by USA Today and stated his case. He’s a great guy and I support him. Totally. Check it out here: https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/health-wellness/2023/08/07/chris-noth-sex-and-the-city-abuse-allegations/70515856007/ …
Mark Bego
SIGHTING: Celebrity-scribe Mark Bego at Wo Hop in NYC’s Chinatown … I watched NY1’s 50 Years Of Hip Hop with Cheryl Wills and was pretty pleased with it.
Fred Buggs
It was an interesting look more on the sociological aspects of it, rather than the business. Fred Buggs, one of the genre’s most influential radio voices then on WBLS and now on SiriusXM, was interviewed and the first thing he said was it was time-wise, it was more like 47 years. I was there and to me, I know we have not definitely reached the 50-year mark.
KRS-One
KRS-One was also interviewed and he talked about how hip hop really began at 1520 Sedgewick Avenue in the Bronx; in the projects. As I said, being there was a monumental moment in music history. Bravo! …
Melissa Etheridge
Donnie Kehr’s Rockers On Broadway, their 30th event, will be Monday, October 16 at SONY Hall, honoring Melissa Etheridge … Alexa Davalos, may be gone from Dick Wolff’s FBI: Most Wanted on CBS. She joined the procedural drama at the start of Season 3, essaying Kristin Gaines, a former Office of Naval Intelligence officer and FBI Special Agent, who was a member of FBI’s Fugitive Task. Sad, as she was just terrific. Rumors abound that she wasn’t told until the end of last season. Sad as she was terrific … Happy Bday Ebet Roberts; Stuart Shabman and Andy Warhol; who would have been 90th this past weekend.

My favorite was Gabriel’s Bar and Restaurant, which served a pulled brisket and truffle slider. Turns out they are from Manhattan, so look for a review shortly.
